Instra will discontinue support for .RU, .РФ, and .SU domain names from 1 September 2026 due to new registry regulations.
This FAQ explains what is changing, who is affected, and what actions resellers need to take before the deadline.
Why is Instra discontinuing .RU, .РФ and .SU domains?
Due to new registry regulations, Instra will no longer be able to provide registration, renewal, transfer, or management services for .RU, .РФ, and .SU domains after 1 September 2026.
This change is driven by registry policy requirements and is not a commercial decision by Instra.
Who is affected?
This change affects Instra reseller accounts that currently have active:
- .RU domains
- .РФ domains
- .SU domains
If your reseller account does not contain any of these domain extensions, no action is required.
When does this change take effect?
The discontinuation takes effect on:
1 September 2026
After this date, Instra will no longer support these domain extensions.
What happens after 1 September 2026?
After the deadline, Instra will no longer be able to:
- Register new .RU, .РФ or .SU domains
- Renew existing domains
- Manage existing domains
- Process inbound or outbound transfers
- Provide ongoing registrar services for these extensions
Will Instra automatically transfer my domains to another registrar?
No.
Instra will not automatically transfer any .RU, .РФ or .SU domains.
As the reseller, you are responsible for arranging a transfer to another registrar that supports these extensions.
Why aren't the domains being transferred automatically?
Each reseller manages domains on behalf of their own customers and may have different operational or contractual requirements.
Because of this, automatic transfers are not possible.
Each reseller must choose their preferred replacement registrar and complete any required transfers independently.
What should I do now?
We strongly recommend that you:
- Review your portfolio.
- Identify all .RU, .РФ and .SU domains.
- Choose a registrar that supports these extensions under the new registry requirements.
- Complete any required transfers well before 1 September 2026.
- Notify your own customers if they are affected.
Do not wait until the final weeks before the deadline, as transfer processing times and registry requirements may vary.
What happens if I do nothing?
If no action is taken before the deadline:
- Domains will no longer be manageable through Instra.
- Domain renewals will fail.
- Expired domains may be lost permanently.
- New registrations will not be possible.
Failure to transfer affected domains before the deadline may result in service interruption and potential loss of domain ownership.
Can I still renew my domains before the deadline?
Yes.
Until 1 September 2026, domains can continue to be renewed through Instra (subject to normal eligibility and registry rules).
However, we recommend completing transfers well before the deadline rather than relying solely on renewal.
Can I register new .RU, .РФ or .SU domains before the deadline?
Registrations remain available only while Instra continues to support these extensions and subject to applicable registry policies.
After 1 September 2026, new registrations will no longer be possible through Instra.
Can I transfer my domains to another registrar before the deadline?
Yes.
You should arrange outbound transfers before 1 September 2026 with a registrar that continues to support these domain extensions.
Please ensure you allow sufficient time for any registry validation or transfer requirements.
Which registrar should I transfer to?
Instra cannot recommend a specific provider.
You should select a registrar that supports .RU, .РФ and .SU domains and meets the current registry requirements applicable to your organisation and your customers.
I'm a non-resident registrant. Does this affect me?
Potentially, yes.
Registry requirements may differ for non-resident registrants.
If you or your customers are non-resident registrants, we strongly recommend reviewing your domains and arranging any required transfers as early as possible.
Will my DNS or website continue working after 1 September 2026?
If a domain is successfully transferred to another registrar before the deadline, DNS and website services should continue according to the new provider's management.
If the domain is not transferred and subsequently expires because it cannot be renewed, associated services such as websites, email and DNS may stop functioning.
Can Instra continue managing my domains after the deadline?
No.
After 1 September 2026, Instra will no longer be able to provide registrar services for these domain extensions.
Will this affect my other domains?
No.
Only the following extensions are affected:
- .RU
- .РФ
- .SU
All other domain extensions in your reseller account remain unaffected.
